The Gemports Transaction Index (GTI) serves as the benchmark for the colored gemstone market, specifically tracking Ruby and Sapphire activity. Far beyond a simple price tracker, its methodology deeply integrates market transaction data by rigorously factoring in price movement and trade volume across key characteristics like size, quality, treatment and origin. This makes the GTI an essential and powerful tool for industry stakeholders, providing a holistic outlook on market trends, liquidity, and stone availability for planning and investment.

GEMPORTS Press Release, June 9, 2025, Bangkok: Sapphire prices remained stable overall in Q1 2025 after a sharp increase in early 2024. While nature sapphires from Sri Lanka and Africa & other sources appreciated modestly, especially in higher carat sizes, heated sapphires—particularly small ones—faced price declines slightly.

The market continues to be shaped by strong demand for fine quality sapphires, especially among collectors and luxury retailers, while industrial and commercial segments remain under pressure.

【Q1 2025 Market Analysis】

In Q1 2025, Gemports Sapphire Index of both nature Sri Lanka and Africa & other sources increased by 3.5% and 3.2% respectively compared to Q4 2024. While Gemports Sapphire Index of both heated Sri Lanka and Africa & other sources decreased slightly around 0.5% and 1.0% respectively compared to Q4 2024.

Premium Nature Sapphires Continue to Rise : Fine nature sapphires from Sri Lanka, Africa and other sources saw steady gains, especially in sizes over 5ct, reflecting strong collector interest and limited availability of nature stones.

Heated Sapphires Mixed Performance : While larger heated sapphires held value or increased slightly, smaller ones (especially 1ct) saw notable declines, indicating weakening demand in entry-level jewelry segments.

Stable After Volatile 2024 : The rapid price increases seen Q1 2024 stabilized in subsequent quarters, suggesting a more balanced market entering 2025.

【Outlook for quater1 2025】

Prices for natural and large-size sapphires are likely to stay firm or rise as supply remains constrained. Demand from auction houses and luxury brands will continue to support the upper segment.

Economic headwinds may continue to impact sales of lower-tier sapphires, especially in online retail channels.
